Since the 1520s, Spain had interest in exploring Alta California. Finally, in 1769, Captain Gaspar de Portola with 60 men accidentally discovered San Francisco Bay from Sweeney Ridge, close to Burlingame. Why is this 500-year-old story important to California and American History?
