On Thursday, September 17th, the James R. and Jessie Murphy residence was successfully moved in two sections from 1128 Douglas Avenue, over the Oak Grove Avenue railroad crossing, to its new home at 524 Oak Grove Avenue, where it will be restored and enlarged in the months to come. After decades of conflict with Caltrans regarding plans to widen and remove trees on El Camino Real, there is a major project being proposed on which you can provide input. The goal of this project is to both improve the roadway and sidewalks for safety, while maintaining the character of the narrow, tree-lined segment of El Camino Real through Burlingame. Though significant funding is earmarked for this project, it does not include the funding to underground the utility wires that now blemish the westside--that which will essentially limit the tree height and tree density if allowed to remain in the future. Please take the time to listen to this virtual presentation, and to participate by giving feedback that will help determine options for this major infrastructure project along our iconic highway. A recently found San Mateo Times clipping, from July 11, 1942, notes this quote and posthumous award of the Flying Cross that was bestowed upon Burlingame-born, First Lieutenant Herbert C. Mayes, MIA after Midway with 27 other war heroes. The good news is that after a 3 year long study period, Caltrans has concluded that the widening project at Floribunda is not necessary, since the far less invasive (and cheaper) No Left Turn at Floribunda alternative that Burlingame fought for has resulted in a significant reduction of accidents. Now the agency has taken recommendations by the El Camino Task Force, and proposed a much larger project that spans 3 miles: From East Santa Inez Ave. in San Mateo, north to the Millbrae border. This is the beginning of the process on a potential major new project, referred to as the El Camino Roadway Renewal Project, which according to Caltrans involves over 100 million dollar budget. Caltrans is hosting an open house on Tuesday, January 28 from 6 - 8 pm at the Burlingame Recreation Center. At this meeting, Caltrans will share information about streetscape improvements being considered, including better drainage, landscaping, safer sidewalks and ADA compliance, and rehabilitation of pavement. It should be expected that this plan, should it come to fruition, would involve removal of dozens of historically significant trees, as these risk becoming unstable and/or damaged during digging for new a new roadbed, sidewalks and drainage.
