VICTORIAN DAY TOURS 2016- Sunday, August 7th

Join us (costumed, or not) for this year's walking tours in conjunction with the San Mateo County Historical Association's Victorian Day festivities. Burlingame offers two free tours this year: At 1pm we will meet at the Broadway location of Wells Fargo (1145 Broadway) in the parking lot off of Chula Vista to explore the growth and origin of the TOWN OF EASTON. Learn why Burlingame has two main business streets, why Broadway has an arch and other interesting tidbits. At 3pm, join us at the main Railroad Station (290 California Drive) to explore EASTSIDE BURLINGAME: After a brief overview of the Burlingame Country Club and Burlingame Square, the walking tour will explore Burlingame’s eastside, including polo fields, hot houses and a home of ill repute. Each tour lasts 45 minutes to 1 hour, and you can even do both, if you are in the mood! The Museum will be open from 1-4pm, as well. Tour and museum are free and open to all ages.

Progress in the El Camino Tree saga

After what has seemed like years, it looks as if the City of Burlingame through its Public Works Director Syed Murtuza has negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Caltrans officials to pilot a 36 month (update: in June 2016, Sacramento Dept. of Transportation insisted on an amended MOU, reducing the time-frame of the pilot program from 36-to 18 months) program to assess the effectiveness of a No Left turn, southbound from El Camino Real at Floribunda at reducing accidents at the intersection. There are other components of the MOU arrangement that are meant to look holistically at the entire highway infrastructure, as well. Thank you to all of our members and others who have taken the time to write letters to Burlingame, as well as Caltrans and the State Office of Historic Preservation with regard to this issue. You have made a difference and are now a part of the history of Burlingame's magnificent Grove.

Burlingame has a Town Crier!

Hear Ye. Hear Ye. Burlingame has its own town crier. How many cities on the Peninsula have an official town crier? It appears that there in only one— Burlingame. His name is Richard Aptekar (aka Allan Richards) and he is a member of the American Guild of Town Criers (AGTC). The Burlingame Historical Society heartily welcomes Mr. Aptekar as Burlingame’s Town Crier. “After this initial announcement, Richard will do all the announcing,” said Russ Cohen, VP, Burlingame Historical Society. Truth be told, we weren’t sure we needed a Town Crier. But sometimes you don't think you need one, until you have one. Richard’s task will be to announce the opening of the Burlingame Hillsborough History Museum the first Sunday of each month, as well as announcing our public meetings. For example, you’ll see, (and hear) him on Sunday, February 7 at about 1pm and again when he announces “Burlingame Jeopardy” a game show style meeting at the Burlingame public library scheduled for Sunday, February 28 at 2pm,” added Cohen. “Although we plan on asking Richard to help us with our activities, we don’t have an exclusive arrangement with him. Thinking creatively, I’d imagine he would make himself available for other events [...]
