Anson Burlingame Bust Unveiled in Library

On Friday, November 16, 2018, we helped unveil the new Anson Burlingame bust and local history area in the Burlingame library. We created a new exhibit for the event-- "Anson Burlingame: The California Connection", that is on loan to the library and located near the bust. The evening also introduced the Burlingame Foundation, that will award a prize each year to the person who best represents the values of Burlingame in encouraging east-west dialogue and cooperation. The bust project was spearheaded by Mayor Brownrigg, Dr. David Chai, George Koo and others who have worked tirelessly over the past several years to educate the public about Anson Burlingame's legacy and accomplishments that remain very relevant today. Pictured in front of the newly created bust are Historical Society President, Jennifer Pfaff (center) are artist Zhou Limin (at right) and Dr. David Chai (at left). GATES HOUSE GONE (1901-2018)

For the first time in over a century, the iconic "witches hat" on the Gates home is no longer visible from afar; the structure has been demolished. Talks with the owner about restoring/ repurposing the damaged structure were unfortunately not successful. It has been condemned for a number of weeks.Gates porch and the claw May 9, 2018 copyDonnelly at Lorton May 9, 2018 copy 2 The Story of the Gates Home

Rail on the SF Peninsula turns 150

Caltrain kicked off a year-long celebration of 150 years of railroad service between San Francisco and San Jose with the re-enactment of an historic picnic that took place in October 1863 near Menlo Park.  The San Francisco & San Jose Railroad completed the line all the way to San Jose in January 1864, but the management invited notables including Governor Leland Stanford for a VIP train ride when construction was about two-thirds complete. On October 19, 2013,  Caltrain brought history to life at the Menlo Park Station by re-creating that picnic with a cast of costumed re-enactors and an authentic 19-century-style band.  Other event festivities included informational booths, model railroads and exhibits, and displays including a Wells Fargo stagecoach, a vintage bus and a replica of the transcontinental railroad’s famed gold spike.  Moveable Feast was also on hand along with Baskin Robbins, face painting and more family fun activities. More festivities took place in on Saturday, January 18th at the Santa Clara Depot, the future of rail on the Peninsula being the main emphasis. One of the highlights earlier in the day was the delivery of 7 National Register Plaques to several historical societies at the various historic stations. These were a [...]
