Over 50 unpublished photos of North Burlingame circa 1913 and architect George Howard’s Hillsborough home and adjacent “Versailles” gardens circa 1930s will be shown on Tuesday, May 30 when the Burlingame Historical Society will present a program titled “Moulin Sells Burlingame.” These photos were commissioned by Ansel M. Easton and George Howard as part of the sales campaign to subdivide and sell these estates.  Leading the presentation and discussion will be Joanne Garrison, author of the book, Burlingame: Centennial 1908 - 2008. Gabriel Moulin was a prominent Bay Area photographer in the early 20th Century.  Known for his photos of post-earthquake San Francisco and the building of the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, he also was frequently called upon to document the homes and parties of San Francisco’s powerful elite, especially after he was named the official photographer of the Bohemian Club. Anson Burlingame’s Influence on Mark Twain, Oct. 18, 2026, 2 PM

Join us for our Quarterly Event:  Anson Burlingame's Influence on Mark Twain Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2pm Community Center Maple Room Anson Burlingame played an outsized but little-noticed role in making Mark Twain the writer he became. In this talk, Stanford professor and Twain scholar Shelley Fisher Fishkin will trace the history of that relationship and note the ways in which Burlingame helped  Twain become  more than “the wild humorist of the Pacific Slope.”  Mark Twain would eulogize Burlingame after his death as a “citizen of the world.”  This talk will chart how Burlingame modeled for Twain how to be a “citizen of the world” himself,  as well as a serious writer.  It will conclude by discussing Fishkin’s latest book—Jim: The Life and Afterlives of Huckleberry Finn’s Comrade— a book which demonstrates the significance  of Twain’s intervention in the cultural conversation in his world and in our own. The book will be available for sale at the event. Shelley Fisher Fishkin is the Joseph S. Atha Professor of Humanities. Professor of English and (by courtesy) of African and African American Studies at Stanford University.

Walking Tour, Creeks of Burlingame, Aug. 2, 2026, 1 PM

Join us for our Quarterly Event:  Walking Tour: A Creek Runs Through It Sunday August 2nd at 1pm Starts from Burlingame Ave. Train Station The tour will discuss how the Burlingame Creek once wreaked havoc on the downtown area, the new Town Square, Mummy’s Cave and the site of the Anza expedition camp.  The tour will be approximately ½ mile on flat ground with limited shade. Meet at the Burlingame Avenue Railroad Station (290 California Drive) at 1 pm on August 2 for a walk through downtown Burlingame to El Camino Real. Presented in conjunction with the San Mateo County Historical Association's Victorian Days. Bring a hat and water.
